How to split an Airbnb by nights

Not everyone stays every night. Type what the place cost and how many nights each person stayed, and see what each owes and what to send whoever booked it.

What this page says about Airbnb is from its own help center, checked October 28, 2026. Potluck isn’t connected to Airbnb.

How it works it out

Everyone gets one share for each night they stayed. The cost of the nights is divided by all the shares, so a night costs the same for everyone, and someone who stayed one night of four pays a quarter of what someone who stayed all four does.

In the example, Rosa and Theo stayed all four nights, Mia left a night early and Jay came for one. That’s twelve nights between them, and $1,200 of nights at $100 each. The $300 of cleaning and service fees are split evenly, $75 each, because they’re the same however long anyone stayed. Rosa booked it, so everyone else pays her.

Every amount is to the cent and they add up to the total exactly. When it doesn’t divide evenly, the odd cent or two goes to someone rather than going missing, just as it would in a potluck.

How to use it

  • What it cost in all: the total on the booking, with the fees and taxes.
  • Fees to split evenly: the part of that everyone pays the same, usually the cleaning fee and the service fee. Leave it empty to split everything by nights.
  • Who stayed how many nights: everyone in the group, and the nights each one was there.
  • Who booked and paid, and read off what each person sends them.

The rest of the trip

The place is usually just the start: the groceries, the dinners out, the gas, the tickets. Start a potluck with the names above and send the link to the group chat. The Airbnb goes in as one expense split by Shares, a share a night, just as here, and everyone adds what they pay as they go from their own phones. Nobody downloads an app or makes an account, there’s no limit on how much you add, and at the end it shows the fewest payments to square everyone up.

Questions

How do you split an Airbnb when people stay different nights?

By nights. Add up the nights everyone stayed, divide the cost of the nights by that, and each person pays that much for each night they were there. Four friends where two stayed four nights, one three and one a single night have twelve nights between them; at $1,200 for the nights that’s $100 a night each, so $400, $400, $300 and $100.

Should the cleaning fee be split by nights too?

Usually not. The cleaning fee is the same whether someone stayed one night or all of them, so most groups split it evenly. Put it under fees in the calculator and it’s split evenly; leave it out and it goes by nights with the rest. Either is fair if you agree on it before you book.

Can everyone pay Airbnb their own share?

Not when you book: Airbnb’s help center says you can’t split the total cost of a stay across more than one payment method (checked October 28, 2026). So one person books and pays, and everyone else pays them back.

What if someone has the bigger room?

Give them more than one share a night. In a potluck, split the stay by Shares and give the person with the best bedroom, say, one and a half shares a night where everyone else has one.

What about a night nobody stayed?

Splitting by nights spreads the whole cost over the nights people actually stayed, so a night nobody used is paid for by everyone, in proportion to how long they stayed. If the group would rather the person who changed plans covers it, give them that night too.

Does it save anything?
