Splitting costs with friends should take one link
We built Potluck because sharing costs on a trip had become a chore: an account for everyone, an app to install, and a limit on how much you could add. Here's what it does differently, and what it doesn't do yet.
Splitting got harder than it should be
Every trip starts the same way. Someone books the place, someone does the big shop, someone fills up the car, and by Sunday nobody's sure who's owed what. The apps that used to sort this out now ask everyone in the group to download an app and make an account, for a weekend. Some limit how many expenses you can add in a day on their free plan, which on a trip is gone by lunch. So the spreadsheet comes back, or one person keeps it all in their head.
So Potluck is three things
- No app to download. It's a web page. Your friends tap the link in the group chat and they're in, in the browser they already have. You can add it to your home screen if you like, but nobody has to.
- No accounts. Nobody signs up, gives an email or makes a password. You pick your name from the list, and your phone remembers which potlucks you're in.
- No limits. Add every coffee and every cab. Every feature is there for everyone: splitting by exact amounts, percentages or shares, the fewest payments to square up, an export to a spreadsheet.
And it should be fun
Money between friends is awkward enough. Potluck is bright and quick: adding an expense is an amount, a word and a tap, emoji pick themselves, everyone sees changes as they happen, and settling up gets a little celebration. Anyone in a potluck can fix a mistake, the way a shared doc works, and every change is in the activity with who made it and an undo.
How it stays free
Potluck is a small web app that costs very little to run, so there's no paid plan and nothing held back for one.
What it doesn't do yet
Scanning receipts, expenses in more than one currency, recurring bills like rent, and importing from Splitwise are all on the list but not here yet. If you need one of these every day, another app may suit you better for now.
Your potlucks are yours
Only people with a potluck's link can see it, and potlucks never show up in search. We don't sell your data. What we store, and how to delete it, is in plain words on the privacy page.
