Hit Splitwise’s daily expense limit?
On Splitwise’s free plan you can add up to 4 expenses a day, which on a trip can run out before lunch. Here’s what the limit is, the ways around it, and how to move a trip that’s already under way.
What this page says about Splitwise is from its own website and help pages, checked October 28, 2026. Plans change.
What the limit is
Splitwise’s help pages say free users can add up to 4 expenses each day. Once you’ve used them, you can add more when the daily limit resets; the help pages don’t say when that is. Splitwise Pro, its paid plan, removes the limit. Splitwise says it introduced the limit to keep the service financially sustainable, rather than selling data or filling its apps with ads.
Your options
- Wait until tomorrow. Keep the receipts, or a note on your phone, and add them when the limit resets.
- Ask a friend to add them. Splitwise’s own suggestion: a friend can add an expense as paid by you, by tapping “you” in the “Paid by you and split equally” line and picking your name.
- Combine expenses. “Saturday: groceries, gas and parking” as one expense uses one of your four, though you lose the detail of who paid for what.
- Pay for Splitwise Pro. It removes the limit, and adds currency conversion, receipt scanning, search and charts. If those matter to you every day, it may be worth it.
- The Splitwise Card. Splitwise says you can use it to add unlimited expenses with no Pro subscription. It’s for people in the US with a Splitwise Pay account.
- Use something without a limit. Potluck is free with no daily limit. Your friends join from a link in the group chat: no app to download, no account to make.
Moving a trip that’s already under way
You don’t have to start the trip over. Start a potluck with the same people and send them the link. Then carry the Splitwise balances across: for each payment Splitwise suggests, say “Ben pays Ana $40”, add one expense in Potluck called “From Splitwise”, paid by Ana, $40, split only to Ben. Ben now owes Ana $40 in Potluck, and everything from here on goes in as normal. Or settle up the old group first and start fresh.
