How to split the cost of spring break
One person books the condo, another drives, someone flies in, and by the last night nobody’s sure who owes what. Here’s how to split spring break fairly, without anyone keeping score.
What spring break costs
- Where you stay. The condo, the beach house or the hotel rooms, usually on one person’s card, booked weeks ahead.
- Getting there. Gas and tolls for the drive down; flights are each person’s own.
- Food and drink. The big grocery run, the tacos, the drinks by the pool.
- The fun stuff. A boat day, jet skis, a club, a show. Not everyone does all of it.
When not everyone does everything
Splitting everything evenly is fine until someone flies instead of driving or skips the boat. Then split those things between some people: only the ones who were in.
In the card above, Kenji flew down, so he’s left out of the gas and tolls. Marco stayed on the beach, so the boat day is split between the other four. The condo and the groceries are split evenly. Bri booked the condo, so at the end everyone pays her. Change what the condo cost and watch who pays whom.
Someone arriving late or leaving early is the other one: split the place by nights. The Airbnb by nights calculator works it out.
How to do it without a spreadsheet
- Start a spring break potluck and drop the link in the group chat. Your friends tap it and pick their name: no app to download, no account.
- Add the deposit as soon as it’s paid, so it’s not forgotten by March.
- Everyone adds what they pay as they go, from their own phone, split between the people it was for.
- On the way home, it shows the fewest payments to square everyone up. Pay each other however you like, and mark it settled.
A few things to agree on before you book
- What’s shared (the place, the car, the groceries) and what isn’t (flights, souvenirs).
- That the extras are optional, and split only between whoever goes.
- That you settle once, at the end, not after every meal.

Questions
How do you split costs on a spring break trip?
Everyone pays for things as they come up and adds them to one shared list, each split between the people it was for. At the end you add it all up and square up in as few payments as possible, so nobody fronts the whole trip on a student budget.
What if someone drives and someone flies?
Split the gas and tolls between the people in the car, and leave whoever flew out of it. Flights are usually each person’s own.
What if someone arrives late or leaves early?
Split the place by nights: one share for each night a person stayed. The Airbnb by nights calculator works it out, and Potluck’s Shares split does it in the potluck.
What if a friend is on a tighter budget?
Agree on the big things together before anyone books, and keep the extras optional. Whoever skips the boat or the club is left out of it, and nobody has to explain why.
Should we do a kitty for food and drinks?
You can, but it runs out and someone has to keep topping it up. It’s simpler for whoever’s card is out to pay and add it; it evens out at the end.
We’re going abroad. What about the currency?
Each potluck has one currency, which you can change in its settings until the first expense is added. Potluck doesn’t convert between currencies yet, so pick the one you’ll spend most in.
Does everyone need to download an app?
No. They tap the link in the group chat, pick their name and add what they paid. Nobody makes an account.
Is it free?
Yes, with no limit on how many expenses you add, so a week of tacos, gas stops and boat rentals doesn’t hit a cap.
